How we measure

Every measurement shown on a product page is taken by hand, with the item laid flat, using a soft measuring tape. Measurements are shown in inches, with centimetres alongside.

Clothing

  • Chest / bust (pit to pit) — measured flat, straight across from armpit to armpit. Doubled, it is the garment's all-round chest. For a men's shirt, your body chest is usually 2½ to 7 inches (6 to 18 cm) smaller than that, from slim to classic fit, so the surest check is a top you own, laid flat and measured the same way. See the size guide.
  • Shoulder — measured from shoulder seam to shoulder seam, across the back.
  • Garment length — measured from the highest point of the shoulder seam to the hem.
  • Sleeve length — measured from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
  • Waist — measured flat across the waistband, then doubled, so it is the all-round waist.
  • Rise — measured from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband.
  • Inseam / outseam — measured from the crotch seam (inseam) or waistband (outseam) to the hem.
  • Thigh / leg opening — measured flat, at the widest point of the thigh and at the hem opening.

Footwear

  • Insole length — measured in a straight line from heel to toe inside the shoe.
  • Width — measured at the widest point across the sole.

Only the measurements relevant to a specific garment or shoe are shown on its product page — for example, trouser measurements are not shown on shirts, and vice versa.
